McAskill is a communication and age studies scholar with a specialization in care work and respite literature, dementia and memory studies. She is a research-creation practitioner using drawing, painting, collage, storytelling and poetic prose as methodology.
In her Doctoral research-creation project, McAskill examines and interrogates the role of respite, as a part of care work, with people affected by dementia (caregivers and their loved ones with it). Primary caregivers who play dual roles (for example spouse and carer) to loved ones with dementia need support and community to sustain their well-being. This is where the role of the respite worker becomes invaluable to the caregiver: “relief” to have a break and space (like the French word “respire”) to “breathe”. Respite work is built on relationships, trust and care. It is an invaluable resource for caregivers to take a break from the demands of caregiving. This research-creation project on what it means to be a “respite worker” will have 3 outcomes: a collection of sketches; a set of prose-poems; and a final exhibition of these works with a manuscript that addresses the idea of “Respite.” These three aspects of my research-creation project will address the process of relationship-making through creative engagement to explore the subjective abilities of people affected by dementia, as well as that of care and respite work.
