First Responders is a collaboration in forms of writing that aspire not just to virtuosic description but take place at the level of thought. As in what Lauren calls The New Frankness (Hundreds, 97) we are committed to being direct but not literal, open but not fetishizing representations of flux or indeterminacy. Naming is not the end of experiment but its beginning. We use call and response prompts to riff on, think with, cut, get into, or double down on what could be happening in a scene, a gesture, or a reverb in the new ordinary. There’s no adequation, no matching the concept with its objects. We seek not the fact of objects but their generativity. We test out propositions against repetitions, frictions, voicings, affects, events, or different and similar inclinations. This plays out in many ways.
